Is this the cheapest full frame mirrorless set up?
So firstly, my apologies for the significant lack of blog posts in the last year. Ok, ok maybe 2 years. Life has been extremely busy and this is something that has constantly been pushed to the bottom of the pile.
I was recently teaching the 3rd cohort of capture and a delegate had bought a new canon mirrorless set up with an 85mm macro lens, which, she explained she bought for around £1500. At this point I was amazed, previously it was difficult to get the body for around this price point. This prompted me to investigate, with the ongoing developments in mirrorless technologies, how cheap can we go? And more importantly, what is the quality like?
I’ve done the research so you don’t have to and here is what I bought.
Canon EOS RP - £514 (MPB.com)
Canon RF 85mm Macros IS STM - £479.00 (MPB.com)* Read Below Before Buying
Godox X3-C Wireless Flash Trigger - £82 (Amazon UK)
Godox MF12 Macro Flash - £248 (Amazon UK)
With this, the set up will work. Totalling £1323
Quite frankly, I think this is awesome. Now if you want to take it a step further some alternative things you can purchase.
FRC Bracket - £108 https://www.trinitydentalcourses.co.uk/shop/p/the-frc-bracket
Intra Photos Diffusers for MF12 - £174 (Intra Photos)
So what were the photos like…
Pretty good if you ask me. So I’ve used this set up now clinically for a couple of weeks, the images are great. There are a couple of flaws with this set up however.
The body shape of the RP in combination with the FRC mount is quite tricky to hold.
The focusing of the 85mm is quite far away with this set up. Meaning I have to crop every retracted image taken. This isn’t a major issue for me given I’m essentially trialling the set up. That being said if I were buying this as my go to camera I’d buy the Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro
However given the 85mm is essentially half the price. You could always start with this then upgrade. MBP is always happy to exchange and trade kit.
